Saudi considers admitting Khashoggi died in botched op

Turkish media report that a 15-member Saudi "assassination squad" confronted the Washington Post writer at the embassy and his screams could be heard throughout the building.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo talks to the media before leaving Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018. The Turkish government alleges he was murdered, a charge the Saudis have vehemently denied.

Overnight, Turkish police completed a search of the consulate after being allowed in by Saudi authorities.

Speaking to reporters, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Turkish police would be "searching the Saudi consul-general's official residence and its cars today".

Turkish officials have said Saudi agents killed Khashoggi.

What has come out of the Pompeo meeting?

Pompeo was in Saudi Arabia for meetings with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The secretary of state was dispatched to Riyadh on Monday after Mr Trump spoke to King Salman on the phone.

"I hope you are comfortable here", the king told Pompeo, according to the reporters. But the royal family will insist more than a dozen operatives flown to Turkey were not authorized to kill him and cut him up, and will call that "rogue" behavior - a concept for which Trump played canary in the coal mine one day earlier in a pop-up presser on the White House lawn.

Trump told her "We're all looking at it together", referencing Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the U.S.

Mr Pompeo is expected in Turkey later. They put the president at odds with other key allies and with some leaders in his Republican Party who have condemned the Saudi leadership for what they say is an obvious role in the case.

Saudi considers admitting Khashoggi died in botched op

"We just went through that with Justice Kavanaugh and he was innocent all the way as far as I'm concerned", the president said.

"In view of the seriousness of the situation surrounding the disappearance of Khashoggi, I believe the inviolability or immunity of the relevant premises and officials bestowed by treaties such as the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations should be waived immediately", Ms Bachelet said.

Pompeo arrived in Ankara after talks with Saudi officials in Riyadh. In private there may well be some strong words, in public both countries may want to present a united stand.

What are USA media reporting?

But CNN cited two sources as saying the Saudis are preparing a report that will acknowledge Khashoggi's death resulted from an interrogation that went wrong during an intended abduction.

The president declined to weigh in, once again, on the believability of the claims that Turkey says are bogus.

This may explain in part Mr Trump's "rogue killers" line, though it would still leave questions unanswered.

A Turkish official yesterday claimed the consulate walls have been repainted since the alleged murder and said the Turks don't trust the Saudis not to obfuscate the investigation, reported the Middle Eastern Eye.

Speaking to journalists in Geneva amid news reports that details of Khashoggi's death may surface soon, indicating that it was an accident, United Nations human rights office (OHCHR) spokesperson Rupert Colville said potentially serious crimes had been committed and the perpetrators should be held accountable.

How was the consulate search conducted?
