9 cases of Polio-like illness confirmed in IL

University Hospitals 2 patients suspected of having potentially fatal infectious disease

Recent cases in NYS have been confirmed among individuals who reside in Western and Central New York, the Capital Region and Long Island, and specimens have been received from other regions for specialized testing at Wadsworth. The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings. The CDC says the condition is not new but there's been an increase in cases starting in 2014.

A rare condition that can cause muscle weakness and trouble breathing has been reported in Kansas City.

A disease that causes partial paralysis in children has impacted nine people in IL, the Department of Health announced. So far this year, cases have been reported in 16 states.

Oishei Children's Hospital says it's probable a 3-year old child named Kameron has acute flaccid myelitis.

Doctors are reportedly hesitant to confirm cases of AFM, especially because it seems to follow a viral infection, which can have a range of specific neurological effects.

"We just had a suspected case reported in an adult male", she told reporters.

A spokeperson for the CDC said the agency did not plan to release updated numbers this week.

Prince Mohammed told Reuters a year ago that Blackstone and BlackRock Inc were planning to open offices in the kingdom. Lurid claims have appeared in Turkish media, including that Khashoggi was tortured before being killed and cut up.

A rare disease similar to polio appears to be spiking. For AFM to be confirmed, doctors must determine whether the spinal cord is affected.

At this point there isnt evidence that would point to a single source of illness among these cases, said Dr. Scott Lindquist, state infectious disease epidemiologist at the Department of Health. In 2017 there were three cases, and since the beginning of 2018 there has been one case in the state.

OR hasn't had any cases of AFM this year. "Shoot, two months ago I couldn't walk now I can in my walker".

A frightening new illness is on the rise in the USA, and it bears a striking resemblance to Polio. AFM has been compared to polio because the condition can lead to paralysis. It's possible that AFM has a variety of causes, including viruses (such as poliovirus and enteroviruses), environmental toxins and genetic disorders, the CDC says.

Other viruses have also been linked with cases, including one called EV-A71. The Department's Wadsworth Laboratory is the only laboratory in the state that can confirm EV-D68. Most of these illnesses have been in children.

Hicar encourages parents to get their children vaccinated to avoid potential illnesses this flu season. They had symptoms of a respiratory illness in the week before developing symptoms of AFM. "Among the people confirmed with AFM, CDC did not consistently detect EV-D68 in every patient", the CDC said.
