India's Election To UN Human Rights Council Buries Pak Propaganda: BJP

A 97-vote majority from the 193 nations that make up the UN's General Assembly is needed for the green light.

India's neighbor country Bangladesh which is dealing with Rohingya issue, was also got elected to the Council with 178 votes to the Council.

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other rights groups also raised red flags about some other countries elected to the council Friday, including Bahrain and Cameroon.

Showcasing its position as 'the world's largest democracy and India's secular polity, India nominated itself for the council.

India bagged 188 votes in the Asia-Pacific category.

Following Friday's election, United States ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said "yet again" countries with poor human rights records had run uncontested. "More importantly, the United States will continue to be the world's human rights leader regardless of the suspect composition and poor decisions of the Human Rights Council", Haley, who is stepping down from her role in January, added. There were 18 candidates and we got the highest votes.

Thierry Henry appointed as Monaco coach on three year contract
Thierry Henry has been appointed as the new Monaco head coach, replacing Leonardo Jardim , who was sacked earlier this week. However, last year's Ligue 1 runners-up have struggled this season, sitting 18th and with only one win in all competitions.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the country's reelection to the council for another three-year term is "a recognition that our government respects human rights and will not tolerate abuse by those in authority". India will be a member of the council for three years, starting January 1, 2019.

Countries can be elected to only two consecutive terms and India had taken a year's break when its term ended in 2017.

Given that there were five nations vying for five seats in the Asia Pacific category, India's election to the Council was all but certain.

"We thank and commend the UN Human Rights Council, as well as the States that supported our country's bid, for affirming the Philippines' brand of human rights advocacy under the Duterte administration as truly responsive to our people's needs and aspirations for a better and more dignified life", Panelo said.

While other countries with stronger human rights records were voted in - such as Argentina, Czech Republic and Denmark - the addition of those with poor records was cited as evidence by Haley that the USA was right to withdraw from the body earlier this year. Such votes make mockery of word "election".

India's presence on the Council will be important because the previous UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein asked the body to facilitate an worldwide commission of enquiry into allegations of human rights violation in Kashmir.
