Cancer survivor 'asked to hide face' before eating in SC store

South Carolina cancer survivor claims he was asked to leave convenience store because of his disfigured face

A cancer survivor who lost his nose and his left eye to the disease was asked to either cover up or leave a restaurant because he was putting off customers.

"It's really made me proud to watch everybody rally around him and let him know that he doesn't have to hide his battle scars", Brandy said about the support her father received online.

"It hurt deep inside", Evans told WCSC.

He added: 'How can a person eat anything with his face covered?'

SC cancer survivor Kirby Evans says he is still having to deal with people treating him differently because of his disfigurement.

On Wednesday, she established a GoFundMe page for her father.

Kirby Evans' daughter wrote a Facebook post about her dad's experience at Forks Pit Stop in Walterboro, South Carolina. "He left and went home in tears to tell me what happened".

"Next thing I knew, she jerked me into her office", Mr Evans said. "He can not help what the cancer did to him", she wrote. "I did not ask your father to quit comming [sic] in the store to eat all I asked him in my office was if he could cover his face when he came to eat", she wrote.

Synod group reports focus on abuse
Young people from LA also asked the archbishop to share their concerns on immigration with Pope Francis . We think the thoughts expressed by these three young people offer a good prescription for the Church.

Instead, both she and her father are telling his story to raise awareness of the discrimination that happens to people in similar situations. "It hurt me to see him hurt like this, especially over something he can not help".

She calls out the store manager in the post.

"I do not see absolutely anything wrong with what I did", Donna Alderman-Crosby wrote. He would come in at lunch time and sit at the food booths right at my busy time everyday.

Thousands of people have shared Brandy's Facebook post.

"I promise you he will never ever set foot in that store again!" said Brandy in her post. I had no choice!

He said she told him to cover his face or leave because he was scaring away other customers. "It was running my customers off".

A GoFundMe account has since been created for Kirby, raising more than $2,500 of its $10,000 goal as of Friday morning.

WCSC said the store owner could not be reached for comment, but through her husband she told the TV station the store is wrongfully accused.
