Turkey steps up pressure on Saudi Arabia over missing journalist

Vice President Mike Pence expressed fresh concern Wednesday over the case Wednesday, saying "violence against journalists should be condemned" and that the USA may be prepared to send Federal Bureau of Investigation officials to help investigate the case.

Graham also drew a distinction between reacting to Khashoggi's death with economic sanctions and curtailing U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia or limiting United States military support for the war in Yemen.

Trump said he had talked "more than once" and "at the highest levels" to partners in Saudi Arabia, which is one of Washington's closest allies and a key market for the USA weapons industry. "I don't like it at all". Frankly, because it's a reporter, you could say in many respects, it brings it to a level. It is a awful, bad precedent. And we're probably getting closer than you might think. "That's why I want to say, we don't want to make any judgments about what happened, and we call for a thorough and transparent investigation".

In it, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy states his belief that if the recent disappearance of journalist Jamal Khasshoggi shortly after visiting the Saudi consulate in Turkey is found to be murder, it should mean "a fundamental break in [the USA's] relationship with Saudi Arabia".

The Washington Post on Wednesday reported that us intelligence intercepts, according to USA officials familiar with them, reveal that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered an effort to lure Khashoggi back to his home country. Turkish officials quoted in media have said he was killed but Riyadh denies that.

Turkish officials fear Mr Khashoggi was killed by the Saudis after walking into the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul on October 2, though they haven't offered any evidence to support that.

The men, pictured at passport control, reportedly flew to Istanbul on October 2 - the day Khashoggi disappeared into the Saudi Consulate in the city - and left later that day, using private jets. It was unclear when that might happen.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) warned Thursday there will be a "complete revolt" on Capitol Hill if Saudi Arabia was involved in the disappearance of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.

"We can not let this happen - to reporters, to anybody", he added during the Oval Office meeting with the Secretary of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator.

Asked about the invitation, Cengiz told Turkish state broadcaster TRT on Thursday: "I am not thinking anything on this subject at the moment".

Turkey, however, remains reluctant to officially blame Saudi Arabia for Khashoggi's murder. Trying to stay calm, I immediately called Yasin Aktay, an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and one of Jamal's oldest friends.

A bipartisan group of senators has forced a United States investigation to determine whether sanctions should be imposed under the Magnitsky Act. He says such a move "would be hurting us".

Groups of men thought to be Saudi are seen entering Turkey via Istanbul airport, checking in at hotels and later leaving the country. Both aircraft later returned to Riyadh with one stopping in Dubai and the other in Egypt, it was claimed.

Social media sleuths identified another man from the squad as a senior crimes scene investigator in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has called the allegation it abducted or harmed Khashoggi "baseless".

Khashoggi's fiance Cengiz was surprised when an American friend told her of Trump's comment about inviting her to the White House, the friend told Reuters. Yet no search had begun as of 6 p.m., and Turkish officials told a pro-government daily that the Saudi side had requested a postponement.

Earlier this year, Khashoggi told CBC's The National there is "no room for critical dissent" in Saudi Arabia.
