Scotland’s weather: Storm Callum to strike the country

BREAKING Storm Callum officially named as Weather Warnings upgraded to Orange for many areas

An Orange weather warning for Galway has been extended by Met Eireann until 5pm on Friday.

The Met Office said there will be strong winds and rainfall up to 10cm, leading to possible flooding and hard driving conditions.

A Status Yellow warning will also come into effect for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Limerick and Tipperary at 11pm tomorrow night and will reain in place until 9am Friday.

The warning for Cork and Kerry is valid from Thursday 11 October 2018 22:00 to Friday 12 October 2018 09:00.

High winds with gusts of 50mph to 60mph around exposed coasts and hills are also forecast.

Richard Brown, Pembrokeshire County Council's Head of Environmental Services and Public Protection, said that although Council staff would be working continuously to clear the roads, motorists would need to be vigilant. High sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds - slow down and give extra space to pedestrians and cyclists.

Here, Clare County Council has held meetings involving various responders as they monitor the expected situation locally.

The Met Office said both Friday and Saturday are expected to be wet and windy days as Storm Callum moves in from the Atlantic.

"On Friday, the winds will ease somewhat in many areas during the morning, becoming fresh or strong southerly".

The National Emergency Coordination Group is also set to convene this afternoon as fears grow over impact of Storm Callum.

NRW will issue flood alerts and warnings if rivers reach trigger levels, with teams monitoring river levels 24 hours a day.

Ms Donnelly said there would be a risk of flooding in places.

A spell of heavy rain will accompany the winds, the Irish meteorological office noted.

Ireland will bear the brunt of the storm, but gusts of 80mph are expected in parts of Scotland, with up to 10cm of rain falling.

If flooding does occur there is a chance that trains or bus services could be cancelled.
