Instagram taps machine learning to detect online bullying

This came with the announcement of new tools on the platform to combat bullying and a new way of identifying and reporting bullying.

The tool - according to the company - will be more beneficial in removing bullying. Being under the umbrella of bigwig Facebook, Instagram has received a number of features after Facebook took over it a few years ago.

The AI tool also detects bullying in captions and comments, including attacks on someone's appearance or well-being, according to an Instagram spokesperson.

"Online bullying is complex, and we know we have more work to do to further limit bullying and spread kindness on Instagram", Mosseri said.

The move comes alongside new kindness camera effects on the photo sharing app in a bid to promote more positivity, as the United Kingdom prepares to mark Anti Bullying Week in November and the USA carries out its National Bullying Prevention Month throughout October.

Malaysia Moves Ahead on Effort to Abolish Death Penalty
In a statement on Thursday, Amnesty International said the decision was a " major step forward ". Amnesty International also cheered the news, calling it "an astounding announcement".

"It will also help us protect our youngest community members since teens experience higher rates of bullying online than others", Mosseri added. "This new technology has begun to roll out and will continue to in the coming weeks".

This feature works in the same vein to the anti-bullying comment filter that was rolled out earlier this year for Feed, Explore and Profile.

The company, owned by Facebook, is also launching a "Kindness Camera Effect" in partnership with dancer Maddie Ziegler.

Still, artificial intelligence will assist in the effort to "proactively detect bullying" on the platform, stepping in with machine learning where human detection often fails, as reported by The Verge. If you follow her, you can get the effect automatically, and when in selfie mode, the filter will cover your face in hearts, and you can tag someone to support, reports CNet. When using the device's rear camera, the mode adds kind comments onto the image in various languages. Do you agree with the use of artificial intelligence in wiping out inappropriate comments or photos on the social media app?
