Google is shutting down Google+ for consumers following security breach

In the post, Google announced it was closing down the service after the Wall Street Journal revealed the company had known about the bug, which affected all Google+ users, since March this year. Explaining this bug, Google said, "With this API, users can grant access to their Profile data, and the public Profile information of their friends to Google+ apps". Google said that it also found no evidence that any of the developers behind the 438 applications that used the API in question were aware of the bug.

According to the paper, the memo said that while Google could not find evidence that the exposed data had been misused, it also could not prove that misuse did not happen. The project will have Google reviewing third-party developer access to Google accounts, Android device data, and the corresponding apps' data access.

Google has finally given up on its aspirations to take on Facebook by shutting down its only social media platform Google Plus.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "While our engineering teams have put a lot of effort and dedication into building Google+ over the years, it has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption".

According to the company, profile information like name, email address and age from some users was available to apps, even if users had not marked it public.

China admits detaining missing Interpol chief, accuses him of bribery
The statement said Meng's "insistence on doing things in his own way meant he only had himself to blame for the investigation". Interpol President Meng Hongwei delivered his opening address, in July 2017, at the Interpol World congress, in Singapore.

Following the news that a Google Plus security breach resulted in the exposure of 500,000 people's private information, the search engine giant has said it will be shutting down its social network for consumers. However, it's possible that data were abused and Google just doesn't know about it yet.

Further speaking on the issue, Google has said that they have no evidence that any outside developer has misused users private data.

Hot on the heels of the Facebook security breach last month, there has been another faux pas involving Google+.

"'We have many enterprise customers who are finding great value in using Google+ within their companies", the internet firm said. "Given these challenges and the very low usage of the consumer version of Google+, we chose to sunset the consumer version of Google+", Google said in the blog announcement.
