Google is Shutting Down Google+, Admits Low Consumer Adoption

Google is closing its social network, Google Plus, following the discovery of a security breach this past spring, in which up to 500,000 customers (between 2015 and 2018) had their information exposed. According to an internal memo viewed by the Wall Street Journal, Google feared disclosing the issue would be detrimental to its reputation and draw unwanted regulatory attention.

According to the Google+ Profile API documentation, profile fields can store a treasure trove of sensitive user details such as such as name, email address, occupation, gender, age, nickname, birthday, just to name a few. Before patching it, Google ran an analysis and found that up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were affected. To make sure something like this Google+ leak doesn't happen again, this new initiative is set out to protect user's privacy and limit the amount of data developers have access to across the web and Android.

The company also debuted a number of new privacy controls, including limiting the apps that can access Gmail, call log, and text messaging data.

As a part of the announcement of the breach, Google has chose to implement more fine-grained permissions for accessing user data from apps.

Google plans to shutter its Google+ social network for consumers, citing its limited adoption with users.

Sam Querrey, Taylor Fritz both win in straight sets at Shanghai Masters
Coric will now face American qualifier Bradley Klahn, who sprung a surprise as he defeated Australia's Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-3. But a sloppy service game down 4-5 cost Kyrgios the set and he unravelled from there amidst a stretch of five lost games.

Google says it will give users a 10-month period to transition out of Google+, slated for completion by the end of next August. If you're given the option to upgrade instead of downgrade, you do not have a Google+ page associated with the account you're signed in under.

Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign, accessed information from as many as 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge.

When Google+ launched in 2011, it was envisioned as a possible rival to Facebook, The Associated Press reported.

Google has denied the newspaper's accusations, saying it determined its course of action based on the data involved in the breach, lack of evidence of data misuse and the challenge of determining precisely how many and which users were affected.

To save any of the data you shared on your Google+ account, including photos, visit Google Takeout's Download Your Data page, select Google+ (and any other Google products where you'd like an archive of your data).
