Italy's Salvini attacks Juncker, hopes for change in 2019

Рим борется за дефицит

On Wednesday, Italian Economy Minister Giovanni Tria appeared to back off the coalition government's plans by saying he expected the debt-to-GDP ratio to fall, thanks to higher growth. European Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said that the budget seems to be "beyond the limits" of European fiscal rules.

"The only ruins that I will have to scoop up are those of the handsome European dream, destroyed by people like Juncker", he said, adding that he hoped European parliamentary elections set for next May would usher in a new political age.

Matteo Salvini, Italy's other deputy prime minister and leader of the right-wing Lega party, said Friday that people like the European Commission President and Commissioner Moscovici "have ruined" Europe and Italy.

"We will assess the Italian budget without anger and fondness and propose changes if necessary", he added.

I don't have time but we will talk about my future soon. "So, we just need to find a good solution", he summed up. It is a hard decision. "It's the way I've always played", the Italy global added.

On being asked about Salvini's comments by reporters in Vienna, Juncker said he hoped the deputy PM would not be left "in the situation of having to pick up a pile of rubble". "One crisis was enough".

Speaking to reporters in Rome, Salvini alleged economic decisions made by the European Union had "wrecked" Europe; and that "people like Juncker and Moscovici" were not interested in Italian concerns.

The row over the budget is increasing ongoing tensions between Italy's government - made up of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and right-wing League - and the EU. "The insults and threats that arrive every day from Brussels and European bureaucrats are incredible and unacceptable", he said.
