Microsoft halts Windows October 2018 update due to missing user files

Earlier, some users complained that the update wiped out their profiles, including documents and photos.

Microsoft paused the rollout, saying "we have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating".

When Microsoft claimed that they "focused on helping people across their work and personal lives" with their new update, deleting personal files isn't exactly what most users had in mind.

If you have yet to update to Windows 10 October 2018 update, you may well have had a lucky escape.

The company releases two updates for Windows 10 every year, one in April and the other in October.

Users who have manually downloaded the update have been advised to not "install it and wait until new media is available".

Dona Sarkar, who runs the Windows Insider Program, tweeted that those who are affected by this issue to call Microsoft's support lines. In order to protect users from these issues, Microsoft has stopped rolling out the update until a solution is found.

If Microsoft does provide a tool, we would be interested in seeing it as well. As CNET noted, some users reported that even using hard drive recovery software would not allow them to find more than a portion of the missing data.

Those who are facing problems after installing the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, can recover their data by going back to the previous update under Settings Update & Security Recovery.
