Rosenstein: 'Incorrect' NYT Story Came from Sources Biased Against DOJ

US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein denied a New York Times report Friday (Saturday NZ time) that he suggested he secretly recorded US President Donald Trump past year to expose chaos in the administration and he floated the idea of using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. Democrats sharply criticised Rosenstein, accusing him of helping to create a cover story for the president to rationalise the termination.

In a statement to the newspaper, Rosenstein called the story "inaccurate and factually incorrect".

In a bombshell report this afternoon by the New York Times, it has been revealed that multiple anonymous sources working within the FBI and DOJ have come forward to divulge information pertaining to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's actions and thoughts early a year ago, shortly after he took over the Russian Federation investigation. He said that based on personal interactions with the president, there is no basis for any 25th Amendment action, the constitutional provision allowing for succession when a president is deemed to be incapacitated.

The Times said Rosenstein told Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials the secret recordings could be used to expose the chaos of the administration after revelations that Trump asked Comey to pledge loyalty to him and also divulged classified information to Russians in the Oval Office.

None of Rosenstein's suggestions were implemented, as far as the sources speaking to the Times are aware.

McCabe's lawyer, Michael Bromwich, said in a statement to CNN that his client "drafted memos to memorialize significant discussions he had with high level officials and preserved them so he would have an accurate, contemporaneous record of those discussions". The story says Rosenstein soured on Trump early in his tenure when the president fired Comey and then used a memo that Rosenstein wrote criticizing Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email controversy as justification. "He has no knowledge of how any member of the media obtained those memos". Sitting in on Mr. Trump's interviews with prospective F.B.I. directors and facing attacks for his own role in Mr. Comey's firing, Mr. Rosenstein had an up-close view of the tumult. "Trump will create a constitutional crisis if he fires special counsel Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement that "this story must not be used as a pretext for the corrupt goal of firing Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein in order install an official who will allow the president to interfere with the Special Counsel's investigation".

"Spent very little time with Andrew McCabe, but he never took notes when he was with me", Trump tweeted. "So the idea that he would be throwing around wearing a wire into the White House to talk to the president and reaching out to other people like attorney general Sessions and then Homeland Security Secretary, John Kelly... that he'd just be joking about that seems very unlikely to me".

Shortly after the Times' story was published, ABC News confirmed the report with their own sources who were familiar with the memos.
