Brett Kavanaugh nomination: Trump challenges accuser

Female celebrities have taken the initiative in banding together to support Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct in the early 1980s.

"First of all, we know that allegations of sexual assault - I'm not saying that's what happened in this case - but we know allegations of sexual assault are one of the most unreported crimes that exist", the most senior Republican woman in the Senate told supporters Friday afternoon.

Dr Ford has yet to give her full account in public and said the FBI should investigate her claim.

Trump's change in tone - and apparent shift in tactics - came as Christine Blasey Ford's lawyers negotiated with the Senate Judiciary Committee on the terms for her possible testimony next week in a dramatic showdown over her accusation that threatens Judge Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation.

On Friday, Trump tweeted that if the incident was a "bad" as Ford says, then she or her parents should've contacted the police.

'I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!'

Professor Ford alleges that at a party when they were teenagers 30 years ago, a drunken Mr Kavanaugh held her down on a bed, tried to remove her clothing and clapped his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream before she managed to escape. They also mentioned having only one camera in the room, and said Ford is opposed to being questioned by outside counsel. But he also called for Ford's voice to be heard: "With all of that, I feel that the Republicans-and I can speak for myself-we should go through a process, because there shouldn't be even a little doubt".

As for Trump's FBI comment - referencing Ford's desire for the FBI to investigate her accusations before her hearing - there is no reason why the FBI would have been involved 36 years ago.

Kavanaugh, the conservative federal appeals court judge nominated by President Donald Trump in July for the lifetime job as a Supreme Court justice, said he will testify on Monday.

"The Senate Judiciary Committee has extended invitations to Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh to testify on Monday, September 24".

His approval by the Judiciary Committee and the Republican-majority Senateappeared to be an nearly certainty until The Washington Post published its interview with Ford, who is now a California psychology professor. He denies the allegations. The Senate Judiciary Committee has yet to see it. "He remains committed to providing a fair forum for both Dr Ford and Judge Kavanaugh".

Even moderate Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said it would be "unfair" to Kavanaugh if Ford decides to not appear, and others were urging leaders to proceed quickly to a vote. At each step, committee Democrats have publicly echoed Ford's call for a delayed hearing.

In the call later Thursday, Katz asked the committee to subpoena Mark Judge, whom Ford has named as the other teen in the room at the time.

The professor said since she made the claims she has "been the target of vicious harassment". The FBI could investigate Dr. Ford's allegations in a matter of days.

The Democrats, all of whom served as prosecutors or state attorneys general, noted that President George H.W. Bush asked the FBI to investigate after law professor Anita Hill raised allegations of sexual harassment against Judge Clarence Thomas in 1991.

Late Thursday, the White House released a letter from Kavanaugh to Grassley in which he said he wants to tell his side in a Monday hearing.
