Manhunt underway after jogger stabbed to death in 'random' attack, police say

Wendy Karina Martinez an avid runner had just been engaged last week when she became a victim of an apparently random stabbing

Residents in the Logan Circle neighborhood say they don't feel any safer with Ms. Martinez's suspected attacker off the streets.

Wendy Martinez, 35, was stabbed several times on September 18, reported Fox5.

Strangers rushed to the woman's side to help her, and the manager called 911.

She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

DC Police Chief Peter Newsham said a nurse in close proximity attempted life-saving efforts before emergency crews arrived.

Martinez's assailant is still on the run.

Police said it does appear the suspect was a stranger to Martinez.

A woman left flowers at the restaurant Martinez stumbled into on Wednesday morning.

"This is a very isolated incident, you don't see crimes like this very often".

'You have a lot of people out here, who are enjoying dinner across the street.

She had just got engaged on Wednesday.

Facebook posts showed Martinez being an avid jogger along with images of her participating in past races. She showed off her stunning emerald and diamond engagement ring in a photo shared by her family.

He was wearing a distinctive mustard color shirt, which was not wearing at the time of his arrest, Newsham said.

The suspect was caught on video after the attack on Tuesday just before 8 p.m.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, authorities had been searching for a suspect captured on surveillance video near the scene of the stabbing. The Metropolitan Police Department offers $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of someone responsible for a homicide in D.C.

An employee at an Internet start-up, she had graduated from Georgetown University with a master of arts in Latin American studies in 2012.

Martinez worked as the chief of staff for FiscalNote, a software, data and media company headquartered in Washington.

"We are deeply saddened by this senseless tragedy", the Martinez family said in a statement.

"Wendy was an invaluable member of our team and a vibrant member of the community", the company said in a statement.

"She was an accomplished professional, who by all accounts was beloved by family and friends", Newsham said.
