Incredible Fire Whirl Swallows Wildfire Crew's Hose in Northern British Columbia

The firenado was born out of the Chutanli wildfire and pulled the firefighters' hose more than 100 feet into the air before melting it, according to the firefighters.

In an Instagram video, M C Schidlowsky shares footage of a scene near the community of Vanderhoof.

"It threw burning logs across our guard for 45 minutes and pulled our hose 100-plus ft in the air before melting it", firefighter Mary Schidlowsky wrote as a caption to the dramatic video.

"Fire tornado destroyed our line".

She wrote about the first firenado recorded this year: 'That's definitely a first.

In 2017, British Columbia reported that almost three million acres burned, costing $568 million to fight and displacing approximately 65,000 people - the province's worst wildfire season on record.

Schidlowsky said the column of air extended at least 200ft up, but visibility was marred by heavy smoke.

Skrepnek said fire whirls typically start at the ground and move upward as high winds and intense heat combine to form eddies.

"It's like a dust devil or a fire whirl-it sucks in the debris and that's what makes it a fire tornado", British Columbia Wildfire information officer Forrest Tower told the CBC.

She says the crew had been working seven days in a row for 16 hours at a time to stop the flames engulfing areas. At one point, more than 600 fires burned across the province.
