WHAT'S HAPPENING: Water will haunt Carolinas after Florence

Florence death toll rises to 25 as flooding continues

Preliminary statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed Florence had the fourth-highest rainfall total of any hurricane to hit the US mainland since 1950, with 35.94 inches (91.2 centimetres) at Elizabethtown, North Carolina.

Hurricane Florence has come and gone through North and SC, but its heavy rains and storm surge have caused significant flooding in cities and towns across the region. Hundreds of roads across the state are impassable.

"Not only are you going to see more impact across North Carolina. but we're also anticipating you are about to see a lot of damage going through West Virginia, all the way up to OH as the system exits out", Brock Long of the Federal Emergency Management Agency told Fox News on Sunday.

"We know that we're going to need significant federal resources, and they have promised them across the board", Gov Cooper said on Monday of Fema and DHS.

In the past year, Florence marks the third tropical system to set a new state rainfall record after Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Lane in Hawaii.

"River flooding is dynamic and it's happening all over our state", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told reporters. Trump said nearly 20,000 military personnel and federal workers were deployed to help with the aftermath of Florence in the Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic, and they would "do whatever it takes to keep the American people safe".

Kaiden's mom, who has not been named publicly, was driving along North Carolina Highway 218 on Sunday when they encountered a barricade across the roadway, the office said. Officials expect as much as a foot (30 centimeters) more as river basins absorb more water flowing into the state from North Carolina following Florence's torrential rains.

Florence, a once Category 4 storm, began bringing hurricane-force winds and rains to the Carolina coasts Thursday night.

Florence death toll rises to 25 as flooding continues

Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Kenny Overton told KTAR News 92.3 FM he didn't know how long the team would be away. Most of the outages were in North Carolina.

Water levels are still rising in rivers and streams, now beyond flood stage.

Some of the victims of the storm include a one year old boy who was tragically lost in floodwaters, a man who was trying to plug in a generator, and another infant killed when a tree fell on the family's mobile home.

Wilmington was also the site of the first deaths of the hurricane.

North Carolina issued warnings to drivers traveling down I-95 from Virginia to bypass the state, instead going west to Tennessee, CNN reported.

But forecasters say the worst flooding is yet to come. About 1.8 million customers were affected by the storm.

The body of a 1-year-old was found Monday morning.

About 60 children in state custody along the coast of North Carolina have been evacuated to a YMCA conference center in the western mountains.
