McDonald's Employees To Go On Nationwide Strike

The workers have joined forces with the TIME'S UP Legal Defense Fund and the Fight for $15, a movement dedicated to raising wages and establishing unions for fast food employees, to file a series of complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Another woman from Gretna, Louisiana, said a co-worker would grab her hand and place it on his crotch, and would also grope her breasts and butt. "They could do a way better job".

The strikes unfolded after 10 McDonald's employees across nine cities accused the chain of failing to act after they reported sexual harassment or misconduct in the workplace, including inappropriate behavior from store managers.

Those organizing this strike, as they called it, say this is the first-time women have walked off the job to protest sexual harassment since 1912, when garment workers nationwide did the same thing. They said the panel should be made up of workers, corporate and franchise representatives and leaders of national women's groups.

One St. Louis woman told 5 On Your Side that a guy she worked with constantly pushed and treated her inappropriately, but management did nothing.

However, when she reported the incident her "supervisors did nothing".

Responding to rampant alleged sexual misconduct and emboldened by the #MeToo movement taking root nationally, McDonald's workers across 10 USA cities abandoned their restaurants at lunchtime Tuesday to take part in what is being hailed as the first multi-state strike to specifically target sexual harassment.

He added: "With [the club captain] Antonio Valencia we need to protect his clinical situation, apart from that we go with everything we have and have to try to win".

Organizers said the protest targeted multiple restaurants - but not every local McDonald's - in each of the 10 cities: Chicago; Durham, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; Los Angeles; Miami; Milwaukee; New Orleans; Orlando; San Francisco; and St. Louis.

"Everybody's been courageous about it", she said.

McDonald's told TheBlaze in a written statement that it has strong policies in place but that it's also working with industry experts to ensure its employees have a safe work environment.

She pointed to victories by hotel workers in Chicago, where an ordinance now requires hotels to provide panic buttons to all workers who clean, restock, or take inventory alone in guest rooms and rest rooms. Since our founding, we've been committed to a culture that fosters the respectful treatment of everyone.

"We have strong policies, procedures and training in place specifically created to prevent sexual harassment", McDonald's said in a statement.

"We can no longer accept that one out of two workers experience workplace sexual violence under their watch", she said of McDonald's. "I felt like I was outside of my own body, watching what was happening".
