Witnesses reported scenes of panic as people tried to scramble to safety.

Authorities have confirmed that 313 people were injured in the collapse.

Officials in Vigo, which sits in an estuary along the Atlantic Ocean, did not yet know what caused the boardwalk to collapse.

The president of Vigo's Port Authority said he thought the structure, built in the 1990s, collapsed due to "excess weight, to overcapacity".
