Maryland accepts responsibility for Jordan McNair's death

University of Maryland admits responsibility for football player’s heatstroke death

Evans announced that the university had parted ways with strength and conditioning coach Rick Court in connection with their investigation. That's why Evans should be on administrative leave along with Durkin - it was on their watch - but somebody still has to stick around to clean up this mess.

On Friday, the university placed head football trainer Wes Robinson, director of athletic training Steve Nordwall and Court on administrative leave after an ESPN report detailed a toxic coaching culture under head coach DJ Durkin.

Since McNair's death, the university has given more training to athletic training staff and increased the number of breaks and cooling stations during practice, officials said.

"I made this commitment this morning to the parents, along with athletic director Damon Evans, we both made this commitment, that no Maryland student-athlete will ever be in the situation where his or her life and safety will be at risk, especially when that risk is foreseeable", Loh stated.

"The university accepts legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes that our training staff made on that fateful workout day of May 29, which of course led subsequently to his death", Loh said. His death was caused by heatstroke, according to the Jordan McNair Foundation.

"Walters found that the emergency response plan was not appropriately followed", Evans said, adding that McNair's symptoms "were not properly identified or treated". A report is expected by September 15, but the school has been provided preliminary findings and shared some of those in a news conference. "Our athletic training staff did not take Jordan's temperature and did not apply a cold-water emergence treatment".

White House Expresses Frustration With Continued Detention of US Pastor in Turkey
The Turkish leader had already said the US risks pushing a key North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member to seek allies elsewhere. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested that Turkey will stick to Samsung and Vestel if USA products are banned.

University of Maryland President Wallace Loh speaks at a news conference held on August 14, 2018, to address the school's football program and the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, in College Park, Md.

The external investigation is expected to include a comprehensive review of the coaching culture of the football team, including allegations that it is an environment based on fear, intimidation, abuse, and constant humiliation. "We will honor Jordan's life, and we will ensure that a tragedy such as this never happens on our campus again".

"We will not tolerate any behavior from any employee within Maryland athletics that is detrimental to the mental or physical well-being of our student-athletes", Evans said. And that ultimately the athletic training staff "basically misdiagnosed the situation".

The two officials apologized to McNair's family during that meeting in Baltimore and issued public apologies Tuesday.

"I want to be clear that I have not witnessed any behavior as what was described in the media", Evans said, "but it is essential that we fully review these allegations and that is why we're conducting an independent third-party review led by national leaders". The first person to be implicated in the on field death of a player was at one time the one responsible for the care of the student athletes on the field.
