Google may soon let you run Windows 10 on Chromebooks using 'Campfire'

Would you want the ability to run Windows 10 on your Chromebook

According to a report from XDA Developers, Google is working on a project called "Campfire" which would give Chromebook owners the ability to dual-boot Windows 10 on their machine.

Some investigative work by XDA Developers has uncovered some code that is intended for a future release of Chrome OS-touting laptops. They say that setting up Campfire to dual boot Windows 10 will be seamless and won't require users to enable developer mode.

Mentions of multiple "campfire variants", and changes merging into the master branch instead of device-specific branches indicate that the Google Pixelbook won't be the only Chromebook with Campfire support.

Google's Chrome OS has become a viable alternative to Windows and macOS since its debut several years ago, but there are still times when a more powerful operating system is necessary. It could be at the firm's hardware event in a couple of months, and Alt OS/Campfire would be a feature of a possible Pixelbook 2.

Older Chromebooks like the 2013 Acer C720 only have 16GB of storage and were never created to hold that much onboard memory.

Today, a report has revealed that Google wants to bring Microsoft's Windows 10 support to Chromebooks. In general, Chromebooks have been priced at $300 or $400, with limited hardware. Again, that points to higher-end Chromebook models being the target here. It has a starting price of $999 and can come with 512GB of internal storage. But if the Campfire feature is real, it'll make the company's products easier to adapt to business environments where Windows continues to dominate.

We've reached out to Google for comment but did not immediately hear back.
