Ottawa-Gatineau unemployment rate edges up to 4.5%

The Canadian economy had a surge of hiring last month but most of the new jobs were part time

Despite that growth in the job market, only an estimated 200 jobs were added since end of July 2017.

Across B.C., the number of people working increased by 11,000 and the unemployment rate was 5 per cent, according to Stats Canada.

Employment rose by 54,000 last month driven by gains in part-time work.

The increased number of unemployed people (jobless and looking for work) is reflected in the rise in the unemployment rate.

Overall, Canada gained approximately 54,000 jobs since last month, driving the national unemployment rate down from 6.0 per cent to 5.8 per cent. When compared to neighbouring provinces, British Columbia's unemployment rate dropped to five per cent and Saskatchewan is also lower at 6.6 per cent, despite a 0.3-per-cent increase.

In total there were 34,700 who were unemployed in July, up from 34,400 in June.

Less desirable part-time jobs made up for the bulk of the gain with 82,000 positions created, offsetting a loss of 28,000 full-time jobs.

"Ontario's share of paid employment in Canada [is] at roughly 39% in 2018, an increase compared to previous year". Compared to last July, 246,000 more people are working across the country, an increase of 1.3 per cent.

Another weak point in the monthly jobs data was a 36,500 drop in goods-producing industries, including a net decline of 18,400 in manufacturing.

Still, overall, he said the report contained a "good" set of numbers that will keep markets guessing whether the Bank of Canada will introduce its next interest rate hike in September or October. "Employers seem reluctant to part with their now more expensive workers perhaps due to reported labour shortages, although the persistence of strong sales and profits could also explain the resilience of employment", he wrote.
