SC head coach Will Muschamp spoke out in support of his former defensive coordinator and current Maryland head coach DJ Durkin after a bombshell report published Friday claimed the football program developed a toxic culture under Durkin.

Offensive coordinator Matt Canada is named interim head coach.

The most notable instance in the report involved Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died in June as a result of a heat stroke caused from exhaustive sprints in a team workout just two weeks prior. McNair, 19, reportedly died of heatstroke in June after being hospitalized with a body temperature of 106 degrees.

A former staff member recalled a time when one player was in a team meeting with food on a plate because he was rushing from a meal to get to the meeting, and [strength and conditioning coach Rick] Court smacked the plate of food out of the player's hands, yelling at him.
McNair's parents hired a Baltimore law firm to also investigate.

Jealous, a Democrat and former NAACP head, said Durkin and Evans "are ultimately responsible for ensuring the safety of our student-athletes". The story followed the tragic death of football player Jordan in June, who was allegedly not cared for properly in the events leading up to his death. The report from ESPN shared the scary details surrounding McNair's death, which called into question the Maryland training staff.

Earlier Saturday, a person who had been briefed on the situation told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity that Court had also been placed on leave by the school.

The University of Maryland released a statement Friday afternoon announcing this development while the final outcome of the review is pending.

"If the investigation confirms these reports, then strong and permanent corrective actions should be taken immediately", Hogan said. He reiterated his support for the full investigation of the program.
