Former cycling champion Ullrich detained after attack on prostitute

Former German cyclist Jan Ullrich won the Tour de France in 1997

Former Tour de France victor Jan Ullrich has been arrested in Germany after officials say the cyclist beat up a hooker in Frankfort.

Ullrich was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when police detained him on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, the spokeswoman said. Mr Ullrich said he was only trying to talk to his neighbour.

Ullrich, 44, was arrested after police were called to a luxury Frankfurt hotel early on Friday.

"It seems Mr Ullrich and an escort women had a dispute and that he attacked her", Lerch said.

A police statement said the woman needed medical treatment.

Ullrich had told German Bild newspaper in an interview earlier this week that he had marriage problems and was emotionally stressed after his wife had chose to separate.

"I have done and taken things as a result that I very much regret".

This is just the latest controversy involving the only ever German victor of the Tour de France with the Rostock born star banned from the sport in 2006 after being suspected of doping.

He competed in cycling during the controversial period dominated by drugs cheat Lance Armstrong and finished second in the Tour de France five times.

Ullrich, the only German to win the Tour, was dogged by doping allegations throughout his career and admitted to the German magazine Focus in 2013 that he received blood-doping treatment from the Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, adding: "Almost everyone took performance-enhancing substances then".

Ullrich was arrested and then released the next day, although a restraining order was taken out against him by Schweiger.
