Four More Dead From Ebola In Dr Congo

Ebola virus

"In total, 43 cases of haemorrhagic fever have been reported in the region, including 16 confirmed and 27 probable, and 31 suspected cases are under investigation", the ministry said.

More than 3,000 doses remain in stock in the capital Kinshasa, allowing authorities to quickly deploy it to the affected areas near the Ugandan border. "At this point, there is no indication that these two epidemics, which are more than 2,500 kilometres (1,500 miles) apart, are connected", Health Minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga said in a statement.

At least nine Ebola deaths are confirmed in the new outbreak, which was declared August 1, the health minister, Dr. Oly Ilunga Kalenga, said in a statement Tuesday.

The experimental vaccine was used in an earlier, unrelated outbreak in Congo's northwest that was declared over last month.

WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said: "Around 40 health workers are expected to be vaccinated today; by end of the week, once all the necessary steps are in place, vaccination of community contacts and their contacts will commence".

At least 33 people have been killed by the latest outbreak.

"The bad news is that this strain of Ebola carries with it the highest case-fatality-rate of any of the strains of Ebola, anywhere above 50% and higher, according to previous outbreaks", he said.

World Health Organization confirmed through analysis of genetic sequencing that the latest outbreak was a new one, separate to one 2,500km away in the northwest of the country - but the strain of the disease was part of the same Zaire family of the fresh outbreak in the east. This is its tenth outbreak of the virus.

But they face security challenges in eastern Congo, a region bubbling with conflicts over land and ethnicity stoked by decades of on-off war.

Thousands in the region have been displaced by fighting between rebel groups and government forces.

It said that three people were confirmed to have died as a result of the virus.

"It's going to be a very, very complex operation", Salama told journalists in Geneva on Friday.

The latest outbreak is coming days after the country declared that the previous outbreak was over.
