Lincoln confirmed the news Friday afternoon at the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel.

The first look opened with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) catching us - and a locked up Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) - up on the progress the communities have made in the time jump between season 8 and 9.

There were groans from the audience as Lincoln broke the news. "I wouldn't want to spoil anything, but anybody who has been a fan of his journey, who loves Rick Grimes, who loves the world of The Walking Dead, you're going to want to see what we do". I love the people who make this show-I promise not to cry, I've done enough crying on screen-I am also deeply fond of the people who watch this show, you people. "This has been the most extraordinary, amazing, useful experience of my career".

During a question and answer session with fans, the actor was asked what role he would like to take next.

The trailer debuted at "The Walking Dead's" Comic-Con panel following the "Fear the Walking Dead" presentation, which featured its own trailer for the upcoming season.
