Theresa May Narrowly Avoids Defeat In UK Parliament On Trade Laws

Prime Minister’s Questions

May's decision not to fight the amendments to her Brexit plan (only agreed at Chequers just over a week ago), tabled by hardline eurosceptic Tories, caused her the departure of yet another government member, as defence minister Guto Bebb resigned in protest at the concessions to hardline Brexiteers.

The government has so far provided no reason for the motion, which Labour is reportedly set to vote against.

With chaos looming in the vote's wake, ministers want Parliament to rise five days earlier, on Thursday rather than next Tuesday, as originally scheduled.

Her intervention is also another blow for May's compromise plan for close ties with the European Union, which had already come under fire from Conservatives who want a clean break with the bloc.

Former global development secretary Priti Patel, who is proposing one of four amendments to the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill, told BBC Radio 4's Westminster Hour the white paper had "many flaws around our independence and our ability to make free trade agreements".

Her Brexit negotiating strategy, which aims for a close relationship with the European Union after Britain leaves the bloc in March 2019, was only agreed with her cabinet earlier this month after two years of wrangling.

It was unclear whether they will actually press them to a vote after some pro-EU MPs backed Mrs May's Chequers plan and EU white paper.

Mann's resignation comes as MPs are set to vote on a series of Commons amendments which are meant to send a message to the prime minister on the strength of feeling surrounding her Chequers plan.

Ozil to travel with Arsenal to Singapore
The 23-year-old defender was pushed into a more advanced central-midfield role for the Gunners' opening pre-season match at the weekend.

Meanwhile, SNP MP Angus MacNeil appeared to put pressure on Nicola Sturgeon, tweeting that the vote "now ensures that Scotland's SNP Government has no option but to hold #indyref2 in next year or so", adding: "Big bad clouds have golden linings".

British Prime Minister Theresa May insisted Monday night that she had not caved in to the demands of Brexit-supporting politicians when she accepted a string of changes to crucial legislation.

By winning Tuesday's vote, May has avoided the prospect of having to go back on her word that Britain will not be part of any customs union after leaving the EU - something that would have infuriated the pro-Brexit wing of her party.

Their plan is simple: to kill off Theresa May's so-called Chequers plan, the Brexit compromise which has gone down badly with both Leavers and Remainers alike.

Ahead of the vote, Tory MPs were told a defeat would lead to a vote of no confidence in the government, sources told the BBC's John Pienaar.

I'm afraid the Prime Minister doesn't see that.
