'No Liability': MGM Sues Las Vegas Shooting Victims

MGM Resorts Is Suing Over 1,000 Victims of the Las Vegas Shooting

The suits do not seek money from the victims, but rather ask the federal judge to rule that any future lawsuits against MGM are invalid.

MGM hopes to preempt that, saying in a statement it did this with the victims in mind.

The lawsuits argue that the company can not be held liable for deaths, injuries, or damages that occurred during the October 1 massacre, as it had taken adequate measures to "help prevent and respond to mass violence".

"While we expected the litigation that followed, we also feel strongly that victims and the community should be able to recover and find resolution in a timely manner", she said.

MGM did not immediately answer questions sent by CBS News.

Francis Dean /Deanpictures/NewscomMGM Resorts International is filing a federal lawsuit against more than 1,000 victims of the October 2017 Las Vegas shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

According to the lawsuit, the fact that a third party, the Contemporary Services Corporation, was hired as security for the Route 91 concert means the complainants should be suing them, and not the hotel.

Debra DeShong, a spokeswoman for MGM Resorts, defended the case.

Michael Cohen trolls Trump over Russian Federation summit
Those are words I never thought I would write about an American president - even one as boorish and bigoted as Trump. Putin also denied the accusation that Trump colluded with Russian Federation in the presidential campaign of 2016.

The resort company's lawsuits in Nevada and California name more than 1,000 such victims, many of whose lawsuits were voluntarily dismissed, apparently with the intent of refiling them later.

The act was introduced after September 11 as part of efforts to provide incentives for development and deployment of anti-terrorism technology.

A government contract defense is most commonly but not exclusively employed among military contractors and can provide immunity from liability in some cases.

NPR said a Nevada law firm had filed 14 various lawsuits there, naming MGM Resorts, Live Nation and the Paddock estate as plaintiffs, along with manufacturers of the bump stock device found in Paddock's hotel room after he killed himself there.

"If defendants were injured by Paddock's assault, as they allege, they were inevitably injured both because Paddock fired from his window and because they remained in the line of fire at the concert".

The Las Vegas mass shooting has been recorded as the most deadly in modern USA history.

Under the law, a company or service provider can be shielded for certain types of liability arising from a designated act of terrorism.

"Paddock's mass attack meets the requirements of the SAFETY Act as set forth in the statute and the Regulations promulgated by the Department of Homeland Security", the suit states.
