All Mother Teresa Care Homes To Be Inspected After Baby-Selling Scandal

The government's instructions comes after the recent cases of alleged illegal adoptions were reported at the Missionaries of Charity shelter home in Jharkhand wherein three children were rescued after being trafficked by three nuns of the missionaries

Several homes run by a religious group founded by Mother Teresa are to be investigated after a nun was arrested over allegations that youngsters in their care had been sold.

Rupa Verma, chairperson of an organization run by the state government for children's welfare, said Indwar took the child away when the couple arrived. "Though we do condemn the incident of child selling, the institution is being deliberately targeted for a fault of one of its employees", she said at CPI (M)'s state headquarters in Ranchi.

Ashish Gupta reportedly said, "This was the last of the four children which the staff of Nirmal Hriday, Anima Indwar, confessed to selling". The Missionaries of Charity sister was arrested on 5 July for allegedly selling a child born to a minor inmate of the home to a couple from Uttar Pradesh. The six-month-old baby was allegedly sold for Rs 50,000.

"We are getting many leads but we can not divulge them as of now", Ranchi Superintendent of Police Anish Gupta was quoted by the Times as saying.

In a statement on Monday, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said she had instructed states "to get childcare homes run by Missionaries of Charity all over the country inspected immediately".

"We are working on verifying them", Gupta said.

According to an official release, the mandatory registration of child care institutions and linking to the CARA has been provided in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 which came into force more than two years ago, but some orphanages had challenged the validity of this clause.

The Missionaries of Charity, established in 1950 by Mother Teresa - now Saint Teresa of Calcutta - declined to comment on the inspections but earlier said the congregation was appalled by the baby-trafficking claims.

Police arrested a nun and a worker from a shelter for unwed mothers run by the charity started by Mother Teresa, pictured.

As The Washington Post writes, she was also criticized for her relationship with dubious personalities, such as Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier and disgraced financier Charles Keating.
