'Without 2017 I couldn't win this tournament' - Kerber on 'special' Wimbledon win

Germany's Angelique Kerber returns the ball to USA player Serena Williams during their women's singles final match on the day 12 of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, July 14, 2018.

After winning her semifinal against Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3, Kerber was asked what she sees across the net when she goes up against Williams. She beat Williams in the Australian Open final that year, then won that year's US Open to briefly replace her at No. 1 in the rankings.

Seven-time champion Williams struggled for accuracy as she made 14 unforced errors and was broken three times against the same opponent she defeated in the 2016 final. After all, it was only 10 months ago that she needed an emergency C-section while giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, and she also suffered blood clots and other serious complications afterwards.

Williams had produced a stunning comeback to competitive tennis, reaching the Wimbledon final on her first attempt after returning from maternity leave.

Serbian star Djokovic toppled Rafael Nadal in a gripping five-set affair, while Anderson overcame John Isner after 50 games in the final set.

"I was really happy to get this far", Williams said after the match.

Emotional after clinching her third Slam, the German bounded up into the players' box to embrace her family and coaching team. Just like she did in the quarterfinals (when she stared down Giorgi for having the audacity to ask for another moment to get ready for the serve), Serena tried to intimidate her way into the match, smacking a ball directly at Kerber early in the second set. Royals! Down to the final point of Saturday's women's Wimbledon final, the script seemed to be slipped from the pages of an English fairy tale.

Death toll in ISIS-claimed Mastung blast rises to 128
Former lawmaker Imran Khan, who hopes to become the next prime minister, condemned Friday's attack against his opponent, Durrani. On July 10, a suicide bomb blast killed Awami National Party leader Haroon Bilour and 19 people in Peshawar's Yaktoot area.

"I was trying to play my best to play for you guys".

Williams played doubles with her sister Venus Williams at the Fed Cup in February. She's 9-2 since her return from over a year off because of the pregnancy, and even though she lost to Angelique Kerber in the finals, she put up a truly inspiring performance.

Many couldn't help reiterating that the tennis star almost died of complications from her cesarean section. After giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, on September 1, Williams dealt with health complications that included blood clots and led to what she said were multiple operations. No one would have been surprised if she were unable to pull herself back into relevance.

You always want to win Wimbledon before you retire, if you asked most players if they could only win one Grand Slam, most would say Wimbledon.

After taking the opening set 6-3 with the decisive break of serve, she managed to hold the ascendancy from the outset, not allowing the American a way back into the contest.

Williams was supported by several celebrity friends at Centre Court.

'I'm completely a supporter of women, and women's sport obviously, ' Williams said.
