Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein speaks during a news conference at the Department of Justice, Friday, July 13, 2018, in Washington.

The DOJ also accused the 12 suspects of conspiring to hack into the computers of state boards of elections, secretaries of state, and U.S. companies that produced software used by states for administering elections.

The charges include conspiracy to commit an offense against the US, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to launder money.

Speaking earlier Friday, before the indictments were announced, Trump said he would ask Putin about the allegations of Russian election meddling.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee who has been one of the foremost proponents of the "Russia collusion" theory, persisted with his attacks on the president, telling CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the indictments meant that President Trump should back out of a meeting scheduled with President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday.

While no American is charged in today's indictment, there is nothing in it about precluding any eventual charges against a U.S. citizen.

"There's no allegation that the conspiracy changed the vote count or affected any election result."
"Time for Mueller to end this pursuit of the President and say President Trump is completely innocent", Giuliani said in his tweet.

Russian Federation has denied any involvement in the attack and rejected accusations that it interfered in the U.S. presidential election in a bid to bring about the defeat of Democrat Hillary Clinton.

■ They also hacked into a vendor that supplied software used to verify voter registration information. The indictment says the July 27 hacking was the first time the Conspirators went after email accounts and servers belonging to Clinton's office. One unit stole information and the other disseminated the stolen information, said Rosenstein.

Rosenstein said there is no allegation that US citizens were involved in the alleged crimes described in the indictment. In fact, both were created and controlled by the Russian GRU. Russian Federation has also denied any connection to the breach.

"Free and fair elections are hard-fought and contentious, and there will always be adversaries who work to exacerbate domestic differences and try to confuse, divide and conquer us", Rosenstein said in a press statement.

Among those who have been indicted in connection to the special counsel probe are former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, campaign adviser Rick Gates, George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser on the campaign, and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The indictment reads that GRU officials began their cyberattacks in March 2016 and employed several Americans during this conspiracy.

The indicted Russians, officials in Unit 26165 and Unit 74455 of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate, are Viktor Borisovich Netyksho, Boris Alekseyevich Antonov, Dmitriy Sergeyevich Badin, Ivan Sergeyevich Yermakov, Aleksey Viktorovich Lukashev, Sergey Aleksandrovich Morgachev, Nikolay Yuryevich Kozachek, Pavel Vyacheslavovich Yershov, Artem Andreyevich Malyshev, Aleksandr Vladimirovich Osadchuk, Aleksey Aleksandrovich Potemkin, and Anatoliy Sergeyevich Kovalev. Trump said then: "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing".
