On the global front, President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama lost huge numbers of followers.

The most followed Bollywood celebrities on Twitter namely- Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone are amongst the many famous personalities who have lost out on over Three lakh followers.

Twitter began culling locked accounts from follower figures Thursday, and as the process continues to the numbers could decline further.

Prime Minister Modi, according to socialblade.com, lost 2, 84,746 followers and now has 43.1 million followers. As per reports, Rahul Gandhi lost 12, 974 Twitter followers.

Social media giant Twitter is on a major clean-up drive, deleting millions of fake accounts to combat social media fraud and "build trust in the website", in a move that could possibly become a headache for Indian politicians and celebrities. "We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", said Gadde.

The head of the company's legal team, Vijaya Gadde, said that most accounts would only lose around four followers as a result of the new measures.
