Roger Federer vs Kevin Anderson, Wimbledon 2018

Roger Federer and his flawless run through the 2018 Wimbledon tennis tournament thus far next face Kevin Anderson in Wednesday's Men's Singles quarterfinals match.

"It was just one of those days where you hope to get by somehow", Federer said.

It was Federer's earliest departure from Wimbledon since his shock second round defeat against Sergiy Stakhovsky in 2013.

The victor of this one will face either John Isner or Milos Raonic in the semifinals on Friday.

"I feel like a lot of aspects of my game can give him a lot of trouble", Anderson said.

"Down match-point, and two sets to love, I just tried my best". I said today is going to be my day. You'll need to log-in to a cable provider to watch this way, but if you don't have that, you can still sign up for one of the above options and then use your Hulu or Sling TV credentials to sign in and watch on the ESPN digital platforms. Nadal will advance to play in his sixth Wimbledon semifinal, and his first since losing in the finals in 2011.

But he found himself in even more unfamiliar territory with an inspired Anderson's relentless, thudding serve eventually overpowering the 20-time grand slam victor.

Even by the high standards of Roger Federer, the first set of his fourth-round match at Wimbledon against Adrian Mannarino yesterday was exceptional.

Federer dispatched Anderson, who was playing in his first Wimbledon quarterfinal, in the first easily, taking the set 6-2 in just 26 minutes.

Anderson's attempt to serve out the set was not without drama but, though Federer brought up a break-back point, a searing cross-court backhand saved it and a forehand into the left corner secured a decider.

Tintin and Asterix have always been rivals in the world of the comic strips for both are popular for their entertainment and art. Varane was injured when France lost the European Championship final two years ago, and he looks determined to make up for it.

Federer was the heavy favourite to lift a record ninth title at the All England Club but struggled to make a dent in the Anderson serve, with the eighth seed playing the match of his life. The Swiss lost his serve, putting the match in Anderson's big-serving hands.

Anderson became the first South African in the Wimbledon semi-finals since Kevin Curren in 1983 and just the sixth in history.

Federer had been pursuing a 13th Wimbledon semi-final and a 44th appearance in the last four of a grand slam. Since then, he's been far more consistent, making it to the quarterfinals of the French Open and the finals of the Queen's Club Championships.

Asked whether being bumped to Court 1 made any difference, having not played there for three years, he added: 'I don't think it would have changed if I played there last year.

Normal service was resumed for a while at least as Federer held to love before immediately breaking back and taking the ensuing tie-break.

But Anderson was just getting started.

The world's No. 2 ranked player was up 5-4 in the third set and had match point before the eighth-seeded Anderson rallied back to level the sets with a 7-5 victory in the third and winning 6-4 in the fourth set. 'Against Anderson he has won all four matches and never dropped a set, so I expect him to comfortably get through.

Only once before had Federer played more games at a Grand Slam and on that occasion, he prevailed 16-14 in the 2009 Wimbledon final against Andy Roddick.

Neither player had been able to break the other one in the fifth set, with each holding their serve, until Anderson did to go up 12-11.
