Fans descend on Volgograd ahead of England's World Cup opener

England's Harry Kane scores his side's second goal of the game during the international friendly match against Nigeria at Wembley Stadium

Twice wrestled to the ground during the match, England captain Harry Kane finally evaded the Tunisian defense just as time was running out.

Numerous fans had taken the 18-hour train journey from Moscow, which is about 900 km (559.23 miles) to the north of Volgograd, and had built up a huge sense of anticipation before the game, believing that England would easily beat Tunisia.

England manager Gareth Southgate's overly cautious approach and his team's hesitance in front of goal resulted in a nervy 2-1 World Cup win over Tunisia rather than the comfortable victory their early dominance deserved.

With the win, England is well positioned to advance out of the group stage, with a crucial matchup against Belgium looming on the horizon. After an incredible game Hainsey and Buvey bring you all the action as it happened direct from Volgograd.

"Getting the three points on the board, getting the World Cup under way".

Tunisia coach Nabil Maaloul said Kane was the difference between the two teams.

Embassy staff in Moscow have visited all 11 host cities over the past year to discuss safety, security and trade opportunities and have made follow-up visits to Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod, Kalingrad and Rostov-on-Don, where England will play their group games and possibly a last-16 game.

From a Trippier corner, a glancing header from Harry Maguire found the skipper at the back post and Kane cleverly nodded home to give England a winning start. "He is the optimal striker", he said.

England had penalty claims of their own turned down before struggling to maintain their intensity after halftime.

Defender Kyle Walker swung an arm behind him, catching Fakhreddine Ben Youssef in the face, and Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan pointed to the spot.

They certainly know how to put us through the ringer.

Kane could not have asked for a more ideal start on an individual level, although England got lucky.

"We got told before that there was going to be a lot of flies and when we went out for the warm-up there were more than we thought".
