Alabama bishop calls on government to reunite immigrant families

President Donald Trump's administration has repeatedly denied that its policy is to separate children from their parents when they cross the U.S. border illegally, but its own internal documents contradict that.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen defended the Trump administration's new "zero-tolerance" policy at a combative press briefing with reporters on Monday, falsely blaming the controversial practice of separating migrant families at the border on Democrats and "loopholes" in the USA immigration system. According to this policy, the Department of Homeland Security will refer "100 percent of illegal Southwest Border crossings to the Department of Justice for prosecution". "Since this time previous year, there has been a 325 percent increase in unaccompanied alien children and a 435 percent increase in family units entering the country illegally". Susan Collins, R-Maine, said the policy is "inconsistent with our American values," adding that "we need to fix our immigration laws, but using children is not the answer". Attorney General Jeff Sessions has framed the zero-tolerance policy that leads to the high rate of family separations as a method to deter immigrants.

Trump has sought to blame Democrats, saying their support for passage of a broader immigration bill would end the separations.

As that argument plays out, others are urging a new attempt to address the root causes of mass migration from people who want to flee troubled or impoverished conditions in countries such as El Salvador to Honduras.

Despite children being accompanied by their parents when they entered the country, children who are separated from their parents are being housed at shelters for unaccompanied children. "This administration can and must reverse course now and it can and must find new leadership for the Department of Homeland Security", she said.

World Cup match report Belgium v Panama 18 June 2018
Panama's chances were limited to a tame hook from Torres and a speculative effort that flew well over from Armand Cooper. The 2018 World Cup already has produced some shocking results, but don't expect this game to join the ranks of them.

Nielsen's portion of the briefing was a 20-minute bloodbath, in which reporters pummeled her with questions about the policy that she defended over the weekend, before denying its existence.

Democrats went on the counterattack, with top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi calling the Republican proposal "simply unworthy of America". "We are a country of compassion, we are a country of heart".

The United Nations office for human rights has condemned the forced separations as an "arbitrary and unlawful interference in family life", and "a serious violation of the rights of the child", and has called on the United States to "immediately halt" the practice.

How is this not specifically child abuse for these innocent children who are indeed being separated from their parents?

The Young Center says its policy team is working with the public and policymakers to raise awareness of the concerns surrounding the "zero-tolerance" policy enacted by the Trump administration that is separating these families. "They are very well taken care of", she said.
