The United States government has separated almost 2,000 minors from their families at the border between April 19 and May 31 as part of a crackdown by the Trump administrations on illegal immigration, according to a new report.
Between April 19 and May 31, the 1,995 children were separated from 1,940 adults who were being held by USA border patrol in preparation for prosecution for crossing the border illegally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said on a call with reporters.
But it's under a "zero tolerance" policy announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that Department of Homeland Security officials are now referring all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution.
Asylum seekers who go directly to official crossings are not separated from their families, except in specific circumstances - such as if officials can not confirm the relationship between the minors and adults, if the safety of the children is in question, or if the adult is being prosecuted. The figures did not break down the separations by age.

While former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama had zero-tolerance policies for those who crossed the border illegally, the Trump administration said Friday, it is no longer giving a pass to parents who cross the border with their children.
US, Russia 'Exploring' Possible Trump-Putin Meeting
Trump seems to be saying Putin would never have dared annex Crimea under his watch, but now that he's there, no big whoop. He claims, "President Obama lost Crimea, just so you understand". "One more time, President Obama gave away Crimea".
"We don't want kids to be separated from their parents".
On the call, Department of Homeland Security also said that prosecutions have more than doubled, but acknowledges they are not now at 100%.
The Trump administration policy is supported by some Republicans, but others have expressed misgivings.
The church continues: "Christian sacred texts should never be used to justify policies that oppress or harm children and families". "Everything the "open borders lobby" is doing is encouraging that and endangering these children". The official tally of separations is now almost 4,000 children, not including March and the beginning of April 2018.

"Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral", he said. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a statement on Wednesday criticizing the government's immigration policies.
A quotation from Trump on the wall states: "Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war".
