Kansas sheriff's deputies shot near courthouse

A Kansas sheriff's deputy was killed and another was in critical condition after being shot on Friday during a scuffle with a prisoner they were taking from jail to court for a hearing in Kansas City, officials said. The suspect was also struck in the shooting. Police say when officers arrived they were shot at, so they returned fire.

According to police, the two deputies were possibly shot with their own guns.

'Our hearts break for our brothers and sisters at Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office as well as for the loved ones of the deputies shot today, one of whom has died. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is now investigating. A third person, the suspect, was also shot.

A suspect also was shot and taken to the same hospital, the Kansas City Star reported, adding that the suspect's condition isn't known.

"We are praying for our friends at the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office, their families, friends and our entire blue family".

Gov. Jeff Colyer offered a moment of silence for the deputies after he finished a speech in the city, the paper said. He had seven years of service as an officer.

"Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith says the "incidents unfolded protecting other citizens. Of course that's reviewed by other parties, independent parties, prosecutors, the United States attorneys, other individuals", he said".

Police Officer Zac Blair says the shooting happened Friday.

The deputies haven't been identified yet, but we know a male deputy died and a female deputy is in critical condition.

Kansas City, Kansas, Police Chief Terry Ziegler tweeted at 11:30 a.m. Friday about a major incident in the 800 block of North 7th street. Details of what led to the shootings are not yet available.
