Small raccoon makes big climb up skyscraper in downtown St. Paul

A raccoon scurries up the side of the UBS Tower in St. Paul Minn. on Tuesday

The animal made it to the roof early Wednesday, where the baited traps were waiting.

Onlookers began to gather on the streets below as calls were placed to Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota and the city of St. Paul's animal control to plead for help.

As we learned from a yarn from Minnesota Public Radio'sTim Nelson, it stayed there overnight before scrambling up the UBS building.

The woodland creature also had its own satirical Twitter account, with one tweet saying, "I made a big mistake".

Another named the raccoon Time's "Person of the Year" on Twitter after it became a trending topic.

The animal was later released on private property near the Twin Cities suburb of Shakopee.

Minnesota Public Radio reporters and occupants of the building posted pictures and updates on the animal - dubbed the #MPRraccoon - as it scaled the rough surface of the skyscraper story-by-story in true Spider-Man style.

Italy, France tensions spiral over rejected migrant ship
Meanwhile, an Italian coast guard ship with more than 900 migrants on board has docked this morning in the Sicilian port of Catania.

Although the local fire department and building workers tried to rescue her by using a makeshift ladder, she scampered away and started climbing the nearby UBS Plaza.

Later Wednesday morning, MPR reporter Tim Nelson confirmed the traps succeeded in capturing the raccoon. It slowly descended to the 17th floor and hung out for a while on a new window ledge before making its way back up the office tower.

Opening the window to let the animal in seemed to be the solution, but the windows of the building are sealed shut, media reported.

But it changed course one more time and climbed up to the roof. Around 2:30 a.m., the raccoon scaled the top of the UBS building and the experts were there to capture it.

Anyway, if you were looking for a stressful summit to follow intently today, you've got it. Power to you, little raccoon.

Raccoons are common in the United States, but are usually found in alleys or riffling through rubbish bins - leading to the common animal nickname "trash panda".
