White House video shows its vision of a prosperous North Korea

In Pyongyang, North Korean state media heralded claims of a victorious meeting with the US president; photos of him standing side-by-side with Trump on the world stage were splashed across newspapers.

The controversial summit, held in neutral Singapore, appeared to go off without any major or noticeable hitches. In all, pundits claimed that Kim had walked away from the meeting with more concessions and wins than Trump.

Trump has been criticized for lending legitimacy to the North Korean dictator, whose regime has an atrocious human rights record, by attending the meeting in Singapore.

Pompeo also sought to counter concerns that North Korea and the us came away from the talks with fundamentally different interpretations.

It was the first in a series of handshakes that were televised throughout the day, but it stood out as a landmark moment.

The two leaders are expected to meet alone, with a pair of translators, for about 45 minutes.

From there, the group expanded even further for a working lunch.

However, some are still wary of the nature of the summit, with some saying the document signed between the two leaders looks "scarily like a draft agreement". But at his post-summit news conference, the United States president described them as "very provocative".

"We had a historic meeting and chose to leave the past behind", Kim said as he and Trump signed the joint statement, adding, "The world will see a major change".

Some more major exchanges, such as joint economic projects or infrastructure development, remain restricted by global sanctions on Pyongyang.

The four-point document signed by the leaders on Tuesday would see North Korea work towards a "complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" while Donald Trump promised to halt military drills with South Korea.

"I think he trusts me, and I trust him", Trump told George Stephanopoulos on ABC's Good Morning America.

Japan has repeatedly called for the issue to be raised in discussions with Pyongyang, and Trump said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon that he had discussed the issue with Kim. "I just have to be honest with you. It's possible. We're dealing at a high level, a lot of things can change a lot of things are possible".

"I was shocked when he called the exercises 'provocative, ' a very unlikely word to be used by a United States president", the official said.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea", he continued in a second post. "For example you could probably have them give up their nuclear weapons, or you could find and verify and maybe disable key sites. but it's not possible to dismantle or disable all their nuclear infrastructure or to redirect scientists who work on nuclear weapons to civilian jobs".

At a news conference in Singapore after almost five hours of talks there with Kim, Trump said he "knows for a fact" that North Korea is serious about denuclearization this time and that Kim "wants to do the right thing". "We're prepared to start a new history and we're ready to write a new chapter between our nations".

Independent experts say the North could have enough fissile material for anywhere between about a dozen and 60 nuclear bombs, and previous year it tested long-range missiles that could reach the US.

Obama, as he left office, warned Trump that the North Korean nuclear and missile programs were likely to be the most urgent problem he would confront, according to a March New York Times report.

"Yeah, he's de-nuking, I mean he's de-nuking the whole place". We'll be doing something on it.

Trump's chest-thumping tweets seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the US invasion of Iraq.
