NCAA passes 4-game redshirt rule; what it means for Syracuse football

The NCAA announced on Wednesday a new rule that will allow players to participate in up to, but no more than, four games while still being able to take a redshirt year. Instead of a student-athlete asking for permission to transfer from his or her school, the student-athlete will now simply inform the school of his or her decision to transfer.

According to the ACC's proposal: "The current rule often places coaches in a hard position to decide whether to play a student-athlete in a limited amount of competition or to preserve the student-athlete's season of eligibility".

Beyond this change, the Transfer Working Group is considering other transfer issues, including the processes surrounding postgraduate transfers. Once an athlete's name is in the database, other school are free to make contact.

Virginia football coach Bronco Mendenhall has been an outspoken proponent of the NCAA changing its redshirt rules to allow younger players the chance to get some limited game experience without losing a full year of eligibility.

The new rule goes into effect for the upcoming season.

The outgoing rule that required athletes to get permission before transferring was meant to prevent schools from recruiting athletes from other schools.

U.S. can no longer take allies' support for granted after G-7
Trump tweeted Saturday, June 9, evening while en route to Singapore aboard Air Force One. Trudeau Tuesday at a news conference in Singapore after meeting with Mr.

The NCAA's Division I Council approved the new rule this week.

The Division I council also slightly altered transfer rules.

As the attitudes toward the rights of student-athletes continue to loosen, these rules followed suit.

Nicholas Clark, a former football player at Coastal Carolina and a student representative on the council, said the change promotes fairness and the well-being of college athletes. "This will clean the process up and give more influence and flexibility to the student-athlete". The new rule was developed based on a series of principles the Division I Board of Directors developed for the working group, including any rule changes should support the academic success of student-athletes, be based on data and create the least restrictive environment possible for student-athletes. Currently, a student's notification of intent to transfer at the end of a term is not a listed reason a school can use to cancel aid. There's still more work left to be done as there are a handful of other proposals on the table for Power Five conferences to vote on in the coming weeks that affect things like scholarships and financial aid.

"Redshirt football student-athletes are more likely to remain engaged with the team, and starters will be less likely to feel pressured to play through the injuries". Under previous rules, any participation in a game meant that a player's redshirt year, which offers them an extra year of competition at some point down the road, was used up.
