How Vettel and Ferrari turned 'disaster' into triumph

Race winner Sebastian Vettel of Germany and Ferrari drives into parc ferme during the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve yesterday, 2018 in Montreal Canada

Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari captured the chequered flag at the Canadian Grand Prix to grab a one-point lead over Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes in the race for the championship.

Race victor Sebastian Vettel told Gazetta dello Sport at the post-race press conference that he found the situation with the flag confusing but amusing as he saw on the TV whilst heading towards victory.

He said the win was special because it came 40 years after Canadian Gilles Villeneuve had won his first race for Ferrari.

Vettel proceeded to dominate from lights to flag in Montreal, giving the team their first Canadian win since Michael Schumacher in 2004.

Sebastian Vettel was the pole-sitter for the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix but, having failed to convert his last two poles to wins it was no means a certainty the German would turn his advantage in to a win. "I don't know why people today are so short-sighted". I think they've been waiting long enough for Ferrari to do well here.

Hamilton, fourth at the time, headed into the pit lane on lap 16 of this 70-lap race, but the early stop allowed Daniel Ricciardo to usurp the Mercedes vehicle.

"That's why I am just taking this one".

Bottas finished second for the fourth time in seven races this season. However, he confessed that his 50th F1 victory was not "easy'".

Grandmother drove with 2 children locked in dog kennels, police say
Temperatures climbed well into the 90's in Memphis on Saturday and the children, aged 7 and 8, said the kennels grew quite hot. They said their grandmother told them to sit in the kennels because there was no room in the trunk.

The defending world champion had to wait until the fourth round in Azerbaijan to pick up his first win of the campaign, but an imperious drivein Barcelona made it back-to-back victories for the Briton.

"He thought it was the last lap". "No, it's never easy", says Vettel, adding that he suffered a sequence of malfunction midway through the race where he had to change a lot of things on the steering wheel. That meant the engine was running hot and we had to manage temperatures, costing performance, in the opening stint.

But Vettel acknowledged his SF71H and its upgraded power unit as well as the team for the win.

Valtteri Bottas came in second place for the fourth time this season while Lewis Hamilton's fifth-place finish meant he gave up his place at the top of the standings to victor Sebastian Vettel.

"The car's been lovely today". It's been a really good weekend.

"We were able to open up the bodywork at the pit-stop to improve the situation, but also lost a place to Ricciardo that we were unable to get back during the next 50 laps".

"There's no reason to lose control or anything like that, we just need to keep doing what we're doing and keep our heads down and keep motivated and keep pushing because they will falter".

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Ferrari garage, Kimi Raikkonen took sixth to help Ferrari closed the gap on Mercedes in the constructors' standings.
