Government avoids EU Withdrawal Bill defeat after last-ditch deal on 'meaningful vote'

May pleads for unity on crucial Brexit votes as warnings of Tory rebellion gather pace

Phillip Lee, Member of Parliament for Bracknell, stood down from his position as Justice Minister because he "couldn't support how our country's current exit from the European Union looks set to be delivered".

One says: "If we do not get what we were promised the Government will be defeated after we have amended the Bill in the Lords".

But they face a revolt by pro-EU Tory MPs determined to retain as numerous changes as possible in the legislation. "It is, however, irresponsible to proceed as we are".

Speaking to a packed meeting of Tory MPs - including Chancellor Philip Hammond, Brexit Secretary David Davis and Environment Secretary Michael Gove - May said: "We must think about the message Parliament will send to the European Union this week".

He confirmed that ministers will seek to overturn 14 amendments which he said would undermine the goal of the Bill and fail to respect the result of the 2016 referendum.

Commenting after Tuesday's votes, Dr Lee said: "Delighted that the government has agreed to introduce an amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill which will give Parliament the voice I always wanted it to have in the Brexit process".

The Brexit Secretary warned that the UK's entire approach to negotiations with the EU is at risk of being undermined by amendments to its flagship EU Withdrawal bill.

It's been revealed ex-Tory ministers Ken Clarke and Anna Soubry rebelled against the government by voting against the motion to disagree with Lords amendment, created to give Parliament a vote to prevent a "no deal" Brexit.

A paper laying out the U.K. government position, due to be published this month, has been delayed because the Cabinet can not agree on a united stance.

Ken Clarke accused prominent Brexiteers of behaving like Donald Trump over the weekend and was keen for parliament to regain some power in the negotiations. "We have no doubt of what was going on".

Mr Grieve joined Iain Dale to reveal more.

The final vote, as outlined in Grieve third point, would be different as the government would then have to follow any direction given by the Commons.

A dispute quickly arose about the third clause of Grieve's amendment, with Brexiters, including some ministers, quickly saying all that had been agreed was talks - and no government could agree to be "directed" by MPs. Yet now, with just hours to go before the parliamentary showdown, the Prime Minister looks as though she has brought her administration back from the brink.

The Prime Minister is now expected to get through the latest round of crunch Brexit votes unscathed, with a potentially explosive clash over the customs union on Wednesday already defused by a compromise amendment.

Government sources signalled to the Press Association that ministers were set to back the move.
