Grandmother drove with 2 children locked in dog kennels, police say

Leimome

A Memphis woman was arrested over the weekend after she allegedly placed her grandchildren in dog kennels during a vehicle trip across the state, police said.

Police were alerted by a witness who took video of Cheeks releasing a child from the kennel after having reportedly driven from Whitehaven to Collierville to downtown Memphis-a more than 40-minute drive-on a 95-degree day.

A passerby driving through Memphis Saturday afternoon was so disturbed by what he saw happening on Elvis Presley Blvd. that he pulled out a camera and began filming.

The news station wrote that the two children told police they were hot in the kennels as there were no vents in the back of the vehicle, and temperatures soared to over 30 degrees celsius (86F).

Temperatures climbed well into the 90's in Memphis on Saturday and the children, aged 7 and 8, said the kennels grew quite hot.

Neighbors are trying to piece together the thought behind her actions.

US military: 4 soldiers wounded in Somalia treated, in Kenya
It was the first known U.S. combat death in Africa since an ambush in Niger in October , the New York Times reports. The Defense Department says a 26-year-old soldier from Arizona has died from wounds suffered in Somalia.

The two children involved are now being questioned by the police, who told them that Mrs Cheeks claimed there was not enough space in the truck for them to sit safely.

The citizen, who does not want to be identified, sent the video to Memphis Police.

Cowan recently bought two German Shepard puppies, neighbors told WREG. They said their grandmother told them to sit in the kennels because there was no room in the trunk.

Local 24 spoke with Cheeks' neighbors about her arrest.

"I don't think she knew because she loves her grandkids", Cowan told Fox 13.

We tried reaching family for comment, but have not heard back. She is scheduled to appear Monday in court.
