Floyd 'Money' Mayweather Takes Back Title of World's Top-Earning Athlete

Lewis Hamilton ranks 12th in highest-paid athlete list

The No.1 athlete on the list, retired boxer Floyd Mayweather, crushed the competition by making $285 million - more than the No. 2 and No. 3 athletes on the list combined.

The pugilist's income is comprised of roughly $275 million in salary in 2017 and $10 million in endorsements, enough to give all 325 million Americans about 88 cents each. Much of that came from his so-called "fight" with UFC star Conor McGregor, which just goes to prove that it is actually possible to fool some of the people some of the time.

Phil Mickelson, who is going for the career grand slam at next week's US Open, was next on the list in 22nd ($41.3 million) for the golfers and he was also the oldest athlete at the age of 47 to make the top 100.

Let's take a look at just how good this previous year was to the world's five highest-paid golfers, as well as how they compare to the rest of the sporting world.

According to Forbes, forty of the 100 highest-paid athletes on the list are National Basketball Association players, led by Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, who checked in at No. 6 and No. 8 overall, respectively. Well Mayweather, Ronaldo and Tiger Woods are the only three athletes to top the best-paid list over the past 18 years.

McGregor was planning to fight RDA, and not Khabib
McGregor has not fought for UFC since November 2016, although he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr.in a boxing match in August 2017. But The Champ was more interested in a "Money Fight" with the lightweight fighter Nate Diaz .

Boxer Floyd Mayweather took the number one spot followed by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The final golfer in the top 100 is Justin Thomas, with $26m. "She's more popular than ever with corporate sponsors".

For the first time in the history of the ranking, the top 100 features no female athletes.

The list included athletes from 22 countries in 11 sports. It is on account of the staggering $24 billion TV deal the National Basketball Association managed to negotiate.
