'Please review your posts': Facebook accidentally shares 14M users' private info

Facebook announced today that a software glitch mistakenly made 14 million users' posts public over a period of 10 days in May, even if the users had intended those posts to be private.

The problem, which Facebook says it has fixed, is the latest privacy scandal for the world's largest social media company.

"We'd like to apologize for this mistake", Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said in a statement.

It is still unclear how numerous 14 million profiles that were affected may have posted content privately without realizing they were sharing publicly.

Facebook confirmed earlier this week that China-based Huawei - which has been banned by the United States military and is a lightning rod for cyberespionage concerns - was among device makers authorized to see user data in agreements that had been in place for years.

NBA Finals Game 2 memes target the refs, and JR Smith, too
When the game clock went off before J.R. kind of threw the ball to G-Hill to the corner, I actually tried to call timeout. How, I guess, social media is used today, the conversation can get out of control with so many different voices.

The issue arose from a bug affecting Facebook's "audience selector" tool, which allows users to decide whether to publish a post only to their friends or to a broader audience.

Facebook has another privacy screw-up on its hands. "We'd like to apologise for this mistake". Facebook usually lets users choose how they want their content to be shared, with basic options being: "Public, Only Friends, Friends Except, Specific Friends or Only me".

Facebook will soon start monetizing its Marketplace by letting users pay to promote their own listings nearby. In the process of creating this feature, Facebook said it accidentally made the suggested audience for all new posts public.

Facebook changed every post by those users during the affected time period to private, including posts that people may have meant to share publicly. In the meantime, it has reverted the audience for any affected posts to whatever setting the user had selected previously. However, it appears that the company didn't change the settings back to what the users had set until May 27.
