Scientists Say You Should Sleep in Past Noon on the Weekends

"Apparently, sleeping in in on the weekends can be a real help", said Åkerstedt.

According to new research, getting extra sleep on the weekend can undo the damage of failing to get enough during the week, ultimately helping you live longer.

However, people who slept for short amounts of time during the week, but compensated for it by sleeping in on the weekends, displayed normal rates of mortality. It's a question that psychologist Torbjorn Akerstedt, director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University, and his colleagues tried to answer in a study published Wednesday in the Journal of Sleep Research.

Additionally, the sleep deprivation did not affect subjects who were over 65 years old - which means that thousands of middle-aged adults are being negatively affected by lack of sleep.

These results were achieved after accounting factors that affect mortality, such as "gender, education, body mass index, severe disease, use of hypnotics, smoking, alcohol intake, coffee intake, and employment status".

U.S. team enters North Korea to prepare for summit
Trump said a summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un could still take place June 12 in Singapore. Kim's nuclear capabilities could come with strings attached.

The researchers also came to the surprising conclusion that regularly having more than eight hours a sleep a night could also be connected with a higher mortality rate.

However, that risk is increased if a person is getting consistently sleeping less than five hours, or more than nine hours per night. They might sleep six hours or slightly less.

He thinks a lot of people may relate to sleeping less during the week and, at the very least, may want to have an excuse for sleeping in on their days off.

At the time, that study's lead author, the same Torbjörn Åkersted, said that you could put the findings of his study into practice. The performance of sleep-deprived individuals was no different among those who reported feeling alert and those who said they felt exhausted.
