Florida declares state of emergency ahead of storm Alberto

Subtropical Storm Alberto heads to the US Gulf

As Alberto moves inland Monday afternoon (around 1:00PM), likely between Pensacola, FL and Panama City, FL (see Fig. 3) as at least a 65 miles per hour tropical storm, Alberto will begin to slow in forward speed.

The first named storm of this season, Alberto is expected to strengthen as it moves up the Gulf this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said, bringing heavy rains and possible floods to Florida and much of the Southeast in the coming days. The season is likely to be "near or above normal", according to the hurricane center.

Alberto may strengthen slightly in the next several hours, but it looks like it has run out of time to transition to a fully tropical storm before it makes landfall around noon Monday on the Florida panhandle.

The National Weather Service said: "Swells from Alberto will create unsafe surf and rip currents along the Gulf Coast". Isolated tornadoes could erupt over the Florida Keys or southwestern Florida late Saturday.

It is not organized enough yet to be a tropical storm, and is considered subtropical.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, warned residents along coastal Alabama and MS as well as the Florida Panhandle to brace for heavy rain and high winds.

Heavy rains are still a possibility, with 3 to 5 inches possible over widespread areas and as much as 8 inches in spots.

Subtropical Storm Alberto heads to the US Gulf

The NWS said waves as high as 18 feet could pound the popular Gulf beaches in Baldwin County, Alabama, and northwestern Florida on Monday, bringing with it deadly rip currents.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Mississippi/Alabama border to the Aucilla River in Florida.

At about 2 p.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was centered about 65 miles north-northwest of Cuba and moving north at 13 mph. A gradual strengthening was expected as the storm moves north.

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for entire the west coast. There were no immediate reports of emergencies.

In our area, the primary threat from Alberto is flooding from heavy rainfall.

Subtropical Storm Alberto was disrupting plans for Memorial Day barbecues and beach outings in Alabama, Florida and MS, as the storm continued churning north through the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.

"Heavy rains and gusty winds continue to spread northward over Florida", it tweeted.
