Cameron Smith retires from representative rugby league

Queensland coach Kevin Walters paid glowing tribute to Smith saying the Maroons would not be able to replace him with anyone similar

Kangaroos and Queensland captain Cameron Smith is set to announce his retirement from representative rugby league football, effective immediately.

His 26 wins as an Origin player is the most of any player to don either Queensland or New South Wales guernseys.

As a stalwart of the Maroons, Smith oversaw the greatest period of dominance ever seen in the series, with Queensland winning 11 out of the past 12 series.

"It's been a fairly lengthy process for me to come to this decision", he said.

"I just didn't get the same vibe that I've had over the last couple of years with him, with his enthusiasm and drive", Walters said.

"Looking back at it now I don't think that's fair on myself, I don't think that's fair on my family and also my teammates back at Melbourne Storm".

Smith's record as an Australian representative is just as formidable, captaining the Kangaroos to the 2013 and 2017 World Cups, and the 2016 Four Nations title.

His departure follows Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk's retirements past year from the representative level.

Oil races to $80 as US drilling rises
Iran produces roughly 4% of the world's oil, with the looming prospect of American sanctions set to cut off some of that supply. By 8am GMT, Brent was up 20c at $78.43.

Smith thanked his Storm coach Craig Bellamy for his support during his representative career, as well as his former Maroons mentors Mal Meninga and Wayne Bennett.

"To me, that speaks volumes again of the person and character that he is".

He also paid tribute to his wife Barbara and his children.

Maroons coach Kevin Walters joked he would have liked Smith to play on in "30-minute spells". He is highly competitive and highly respected but above all that he is a great person.

Walters said it was fitting Smith's final Origin appearance in 2017 was one to remember.

"From a personal point of view I would have loved to have played on for a lot longer but unfortunately we don't live in a flawless world and those things don't happen", Smith said.

Greg Inglis is widely seen as the most likely option to replace Smith as Queensland captain, with Inglis and NSW skipper Boyd Cordner in the frame to lead the national team.
