Australians warned about Bali travel after Indonesian terror attacks

The attack in Surabaya comes 24 hours after suicide bombings at three churches in the city by members of one family killed at least 13 people. "Two people were riding (on the motorcycle) and a woman was sitting at the back".

At least four children belonging to two of the three families behind the string of bombings in Surabaya and Sidoarjo, East Java, on Sunday (May 13) and Monday, became orphans after their parents were killed in the explosions. The bombings, the deadliest in Indonesia in more than a decade, also wounded 40 people.

He said the wife and two daughters were involved in an attack on a second church and at the third church "two other children rode the motorbike and had the bomb across their laps".

The father of the church suicide bombers was a local leader in the network, police have said.

Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo condemned the attacks as "barbaric" and vowed that authorities would root out and destroy Islamic militant networks.

Indonesia, which is set to host the Asian Games in just three months, has long struggled with Islamic militancy, including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people - including Taiwanese Eve Kuo (郭惠敏) - in the nation's worst-ever terror attack.

On Sunday night, a bomb in the Wonocolo low-priced housing complex in Sidoarjo exploded prematurely, killing a woman and her 17-year-old child, police said.

ISIS first mounted attacks in Indonesia in 2016, claiming the lives of four civilians in explosions and shootings.

JAD has been linked to a series of other plots in Indonesia, including a firebomb attack on a church that killed a toddler and a plan to launch a Christmas-time suicide bombing. "We must tighten security", he said.

The latest attacks in predominantly Muslim Indonesia came days after police ended a riot and hostage-taking at a detention centre near Jakarta that left five dead.

He said that the attack was carried out by a family of five. The newspaper reported that 12 worshippers died in the church attacks.

Police suspected Sunday's attacks on the churches were carried out by a cell of the ISIS-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organization on a U.S. State Department terrorist list that is reckoned to have drawn hundreds Indonesian sympathizers of ISIS.

Although considered Indonesia's largest pro-IS coalition, JAD's structure and links to the global terror network are murky.
