The Players Championship leaderboard: Scores, highlights from Round 4 at TPC Sawgrass

Webb Simpson Ties Course Record at The Players Championship

But that's exactly what Simpson is doing at the Players Championship, as he fired a four-under 68 on Saturday to reach 19 under and push his lead to seven heading into Sunday's final round.

Danny Lee was in second place and Dustin Johnson in third (10-under).

He ended the front nine with a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-five ninth for a one-shot lead, and then he took off. Starting with an up-and-down at the par-five 11, Simpson ran off six straight birdies - three straight from the 20-foot range, the most unlikely birdie with the one from behind the 15 green, and another up-and-down from left the of the green on the par-five 16.

Lee posted a 70 to take solo second on 12-under, while Johnson hit a 69 to move up to third.

Woods sent a buzz throughout TPC Sawgrass by birdieing six of his first nine holes for a front-nine 30, and then added two more birdies at 11 and 12.

"Eventually I was going to put all the pieces together", said Woods. Different feeling today. A little more survival feeling.

"Realistically, I probably could have got a couple more out of it and got to 10 for the day", Woods said. "Although I hadn't played well, I've really liked being here". I wanted to hit away from the pins unless I had a sand-wedge in my hand, and I did that well.

Fans were hoping for a shootout or a close finish to the day and possibly a tightly contest round on Sunday, but that doesn't look like it will materialize. But they made up only three shots on Simpson and were 11 shots behind.

That pushed his lead over the rest of the field to a preposterous eight strokes, but it shrank slightly coming home.

"Quite a bit", Simpson said when asked how much he wants to win for his mother. He hit his third onto the green and had a two-putt to finish the hole.

While Woods and Spieth both played their best rounds of the tournament, The Players Championship nearly certainly belongs to Simpson, barring a colossal collapse during Sunday's final round.

Rory McIlroy will have an unscheduled weekend off after he missed the halfway cut following a disappointing 74 on the second day of The Players Championship.

The world No 1 is one ahead of Jason Dufner, Xander Schauffele, Jimmy Walker and Jason Day, with Woods and Spieth back on eight under alongside leading English challengers Ian Poulter and Tommy Fleetwood.

Here's a link to all the tee times for Sunday's final round.

While Woods and Spieth are sure to draw a lion's share of the crowd's adoration on Sunday, neither player will have a realistic chance of chasing down Simpson.

While a seven-stroke lead is a mountain of an advantage for any professional golfer, it's still about executing for 18 holes and not letting any early mistakes impact the mindset as the round progresses.

The belief here is that Simpson is playing as well as he has at any time in his career. "This is a hard tournament to come to after a three-week break".

Look for Johnson to have a strong finishing round.

Jordan Spieth gives us the first of what's sure to be many incredible shots on moving day. There were some low numbers on Saturday, too, with Woods and Spieth each shooting 65. They should be able to spur each other on, and after moving up 59 spots on the scoreboard Saturday, it would not be a surprise to see both golfers get inside the top five by the end of the final round.
