Hamilton ends Vettel's pole run in Spain

Spanish Grand Prix

While Hamilton continued to lead the Spanish GP, Bottas and Vettel switched places just before the safety auto was called with the latter now two seconds behind Hamilton.

The Spanish Grand Prix was one of pure dominance for Mercedes AMG Petronas.

Vettel finished fourth at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday, extending his winless run to three races and seeing Lewis Hamilton increase his lead to 17 points in the drivers' championship.

After his unlikely victory in Azerbaijan it was a second straight win for Hamilton as he bids for a fifth world championship - and it couldn't have been extra comfy.

Mercedes has struggled compared to Ferrari at times this season, with Sebastian Vettel winning the opening two races and taking three consecutive pole positions as the Scuderia had a more consistent vehicle.

"We had such a good auto".

"But it took everything from us to get this result, and to get a one-two in qualifying is fantastic". Following a safety auto appearance, Hamilton got the whole shot on the restart and rabbited away.

He had won in Bahrain and in the season-opener in Australia, when he wasn't as dominant as Hamilton but took advantage of a safety vehicle to win on race strategy.

Cooper Says Dern Is A "Disgrace", But Will Take Catchweight Fight
They told me even without a fight, they're going to make me make weight and they're going to stay on me, but that's what I need. There are champions that are caught for drugs and cocaine and things like that. "I believe that they won't", Dern said.

But the decision did not work out and cost Vettel what could be a crucial six points in his title fight with Hamilton. We just didn't have enough pace at the end.

Vettel gave away his position when Ferrari made a decision to go for an extra stop and give the German driver fresher tires. Vettel, or Raikkonen, could just do what Alonso did in 2013 and get that Ferrari over the line first, but due to driver error and (what looks like) poor strategic calls, the race might just be an uphill battle. Perez started 15th and lost positions at the start avoiding Grosjean. Therefore we were not able to stay out for another 25 laps.

Ocon retired with an oil pressure problem.

Leclerc scored points for the second race in a row, setting him up nicely for the next in his home town of Monaco.

"We were going through the tyres quicker than the others, though obviously it looks different and looks wrong".

Unlike some of the earlier races, the Spanish GP lacked the drama that we were looking forward to, but Mercedes certainly had something to look forward as the team performed brilliantly with a 1-2 finish. It capped off a disappointing afternoon for Ferrari, who saw Kimi Raikkonen retire after suffering a loss of power with a brand new engine which had been fitted to his vehicle on Saturday morning.

Lewis Hamilton took six of the nine victories in Europe a year ago to take a stranglehold on the championship, but although he is pleased with the result in Spain, Wolff said he is not getting overexcited just yet. "There is nothing we could have done differently today, but we need to try and keep pushing". The incident promoted to Verstappen to fourth and eventually third after the second Ferrari went into the pits.

But Vettel says his team had no choice and could not one-stop like Mercedes and Red Bull, telling Sky F1's Natalie PInkham: "For us it was not an option to stay out". But today we had them working.
